Mayor Daniel Bianchi congratulates the Pittsfield schools for their recycling efforts that have saved the city thousands of dollars. Pittsfield High Principal Tracey Benson joined him at the steps of PHS on Monday.PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mayor Daniel Bianchi and other city officials on Monday hailed successes of recycling efforts in city public schools that they say have saved local taxpayers as much as $30,000 annually.

At a press conference on the steps of Pittsfield High School, the mayor presented commendations to representatives from each public school in acknowlegdement of their achievements implementing aggressive recycling in recent years.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Pittsfield Fire Department officials are trying to locate the source of emergency siren activations at Herberg Middle School. A number of times over the past 10 days there have been reported activations of the early warning emergency siren at Herberg Middle School on 501 Pomeroy Ave.  
 Currently, it appears that some type of malfunction is occasionally activating the siren at Herberg School, as it is the only siren being reported to the fire department at this time.  If anyone knows of other locations being activated, contact the Pittsfield Fire Department Dispatch Facility.  The number to call to report any problem is

LENOX, Mass. — The town of Lenox has released the results of the annual town election held Monday, May 7.

In a five-way race for two three-year seats on the Board of Selectmen, Edward Lane (760) and Channing Gibson (562) bested David W. Berkel (332), Jedd L. Hall (195) and Carolyn L. Barry (134). There was one write-in.

Frances E. Sorrentino (829) and Jennifer S. Reinholt (530) won the two three-year seats on the School Committee over Jo Anne H. Magee (450) and Nora O'Brien (268); and Kathleen McNulty-Vaughan easily won the three-year seat on the Planning Board, polling 734 votes to Mark D. Woodward's 170.

Winning uncontested races were Hugh C. Cowhig, moderator, 787 votes; Marie V.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — An aggressive fox was put down over the weekend after several attacks.

The Pittsfield Police Department's Patrol and Animal Control Units responded to multiple calls involving an aggressive fox in the outer Williams Street area on Friday night, May 4, and Saturday morning, May 5. 

The department responded to or investigated three separate incidents involving one dog and two people who were bitten.

During the Saturday morning incident, the fox was put down by patrol officers and the remains have been transported to the state lab for testing.

Anyone who may have witnessed aggressive behavior by a fox in this area, or who may have been exposed to this animal, should

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After dozens of phone calls from disappointed residents, Mayor Daniel Bianchi has reversed his decision to cancel Third Thursday this month.

On Friday, Bianchi told Cultural Director Megan Whilden that the downtown event would be canceled because of construction. The downtown streetscape project would make pedestrian travel difficult in some areas.

However, after news of the canceled event spread on Monday, dozens of residents called Bianchi's office in disappointed. By Monday afternoon, Bianchi released a statement saying that the May 17 event is back on.

Friday's unemployment rate was a real downer for the markets. Although the unemployment rate itself dropped from 8.2 percent to 8.1 percent, that number was deceiving. The markets immediately saw through the headline number. The resultant decline was hefty.

In April, the labor force participation rate, the employment-to-population ratio, and the number of people who said they are employed all fell in the month. The sad fact was that 350,000 people quit looking for jobs altogether. As a result, the labor force technically shrunk, which makes the overall unemployment rate look better than it actually was.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — President Barack Obama will be back in the New York Capital District on Tuesday, this time to visit a technology campus with Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

This is the third trip in as many years for the president to the region, each time highlighting on jobs and economics.

In 2009, he was at Hudson Community College with Dr. Jill Biden to exhort education and innovation to solve the nation's economic woes. He was last in the region in January 2011, when he appeared in Schenectady next to GE's Jeffrey Immelt, whom he tapped to head an advisory council charged with creating jobs.

Cases heard before Judge Daniel Ford on Monday, April 30.

Gerard Jones, 25, of Pittsfield pleaded guilty to single counts of distribution of cocaine and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

Ford sentences him to two and a half years at the Berkshire County House of Correction on the distribution charge and then an additional two and half years on the conspiracy charge.

Additional counts of distribution of cocaine and conspiracy to violate drug laws were dismissed by the state. Jones sold cocaine and conspired with others to sell cocaine in Pittsfield on October 6, 2010.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Andrea F. Nuciforo Jr. became the first candidate to submit nomination papers to appear on the ballot for the Sept. 6 Democratic primary for the redrawn 1st Massachusetts District. 

The former state senator from Pittsfield turned in his signatures to the secretary of the commonwealth's Springfield office Thursday.

In total, 2,249 signatures collected by his campaign were submitted. His campaign celebrated by launching a fundraising appeal later
