PCTV and iBerkshires Hosting Preliminary Election Debates

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Candidates in the preliminary election will pitch their ideas during live debates hosted by Pittsfield Community Television in partnership with iBerkshires on Tuesday.

Debates will be held on Sept. 5 at the Berkshire Athenaeum beginning at 5 p.m. with Ward 2 followed by Ward 7 at 6 p.m. and the mayoral debate at 7 p.m.

These races will be trimmed on Sept. 19 in preparation for the general election on Nov. 7.

The mayoral debate will feature Peter Marchetti, John Krol, and Karen Kalinowsky.  The three are running to replace Mayor Linda Tyer, who is not seeking re-election.  

Krol is a former city councilor and Marchetti and Kalinowsky are current city

Flushing of Pittsfield's Water System to Begin Tuesday

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city of Pittsfield's Department of Public Utilities announced flushing of the city's water system will begin Tuesday, Sept. 5.    Water mains throughout the city will be flushed through hydrants over the course of four weeks to remove accumulations of pipeline corrosion products. Mains will be flushed Monday through Friday each week, except holidays, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. The upcoming flushing for the week of September 5 may be expected to affect the following areas: Starting at the town line on Dalton Avenue working west through Coltsville including lower Crane Avenue, Meadowview neighborhood, following Cheshire Road

Pittsfield Remembers Those Lost to Overdoses, Raises Awareness on Harm Reduction

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The city marked National Overdose Awareness Day with a standout and a candlelit vigil.   In 2022, there were 48 fatal overdoses in Berkshire County— 29 just in Pittsfield.  Since 2012, there has been a staggering 418 deaths from overdose in the county.   Each person lost was represented in Park Square with a sign that a candle was placed in front of.   Julie MacDonald, program director of Living in Recovery, reminded attendees that each person grieved as a unique individual with their own personalities, strengths, struggles, accomplishments, disappointments, and life stories.   "We come together on this day with a range of

Sonsini Shelter's Last Animal 'Knight' Seeking a Kingdom of His Own

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — As the last animal of Eleanor Sonsini Animal Shelter, Knight is living more like a king.

The under-2-year-old American pit bull mix has the whole shelter as his palace but longs for a forever home. He has been all over social media and done plenty of meet-and-greets but has yet to find the perfect match.

Shelter Manager Noelle Howland is going to ensure that Knight's story ends well. Though the shelter closed to the public on Friday, she will stay there with the pup until he finds an adopter.

McCann Tech Students Plan Charity Run for Maui Fire Relief

CHESHIRE, Mass. — The McCann Tech cross country team on Sept. 16 will host a 5-kilometer trail run and 1 mile walk to benefit victims of August's fire in Hawaii.   The Walk/Run for Maui fund-raiser will take place at Whitney's Farm on Ingalls Road (follow the dirt road past the U-Pick blueberries).   Check in on Saturday, Sept. 16, will be at 7:30 a.m. The 5K trail run begins at 8:30, and the stroller-friendly 1 mile walk begins at 9:30.   The cost to register is $20 in advance or $25 the day of registration. Warmer Temperatures This Labor Day Weekend

It will actually feel like summer this weekend with temperatures in the 80s.   Today Thursday, Aug. 31 there will be sunshine with temperatures in the low 70s.   The same can be expected Friday but with warmer temperatures in the high 70s, reports AccuWeather.   Saturday, Sept. 2 will be partly sunny with temperatures in the low 80s.   Sunday will be mostly sunny and more humid with temperatures again in the low 80s.   Monday will be in the mid-80s with mostly sunny skies, and Tuesday is set to be even warmer with temperatures possibly breaking into the 90s.

Driscoll Sees Renovations and Career Tracks at BCC

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll swung by Berkshire Community College on Wednesday for a tour of its educational facilities after making grant announcements in Stockbridge.

President Ellen Kennedy led Driscoll through the college's One Stop Center for student services, the Berkshire Science Commons maker space, BCC's nursing labs, and renovations to the Hawthorne and Melville halls.

They were joined by Mayor Linda Tyer and state Rep. Tricia Farley-Bouvier.

Registration Open for Monument Cup 3-on-3 Soccer Tourney

GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. -- The 24th annual Monument Cup 3-on-3 soccer tournament returns on Sunday, Sept. 24, at Monument Mountain Regional High School.   The event features boys and girls divisions in the under-10, under-12 and under-14 age groups.   Teams of three to four players are guaranteed at least three matches. The top four teams in each division advance to the semifinals, with the championship matches played on the varsity field.   Teams are encouraged to wear their own handmade, creative uniforms.   Each division is limited to 16 teams. They are married. Dalton Considers Implementing Climate Change Policy

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board is considering a climate-change policy to improve the town's chances of obtaining grants.    This policy is a significant commitment because it sets requirements that the department heads and the Finance Committee has to follow, Select Board chair Joseph Diver said at last week's meeting.    The board voted to postpone the decision until it can look into the topic further and until the policy is reviewed by Town Manager Thomas Hutcheson and department heads.   It is important that the department heads are involved in the conversation because of the impact it will have on them and the town as a whole, Diver
