Berkshire Kickoff Classic Returns to Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire Kickoff Classic is back, and the regional soccer tournament, run by Pittsfield Soccer Club, will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 2 & 3 at Berkshire Community College (BCC) and Crosby Elementary School.    More than 30 teams are signed up to participate.  Games will be played throughout Saturday and Sunday.  The Berkshire Kickoff Classic High School Jamboree will take place Friday night at BCC.    "We are thrilled to bring this tournament back," stated BKC Tournament Director Leah Casucci.  "As we started to put the planning into place, we have heard so many nostalgic sentiments about

Pittsfield's 'Lest We Forget' Mural Gets New Life

Vietnam veteran Martha Green, who is portrayed on the mural, sings the national anthem and 'America the Beautiful.'

PITTSFIELD, Mass.-— A memorial to the Vietnam War has a new life on Pearl Street after the mural was moved and revitalized.

On Tuesday, the city unveiled "Lest We Forget" mural in its new location surrounded by nearly 100 officials and community members.  

The artwork honors and remembers Berkshire County's military personnel who were killed in action in Vietnam and veterans of the war who are living today.  

"We are here today to honor that and remember these 27 veterans killed in action," said Fran Tremblay of Vietnam

Pittsfield Clerks Office Tests Ballots Ahead of Preliminary Election

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City clerk's office is preparing for a seamless election by testing all of the voting equipment.

On Tuesday, City Clerk Michele Benjamin, Assistant Clerk Heather Brazeau and Registrar of Voters Clerk Joshua Munn tested the ward and precinct ballot machines. The city has seven wards with each having a Precinct A and B.

For Benjamin, this election is protocol as usual.

"It's the same thing all the time," she said. "We don't do anything different."

The state requires that all machines be tested before they are sent out to the polls. Zero tapes are run to prove that there is no data on the storage cards and 50 test ballots

Deadline to Apply for RMV 2023 Low Number Plate Lottery

BOSTON —The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is reminding drivers that applications for the 2023 Low Number Plate Lottery are available online at myRMV Online Service Center and must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023.

Winners will be notified by mail if selected for a low-number plate. 

This year, there are 191 plates available through the low plate lottery. Some of the available low plates include 13F, 17V, 28E, Z64, 301, 1999, 4004, 4400, and 8511.

Applicants should note that there is no fee to apply for the lottery. However, should the applicant be selected as a winner, there is a special plate fee that will be required, as well as a

Pittsfield's Homeless Advisory Committee Hosting Housing Resource Fair

Man Arrested in North Adams on Drug Trafficking Charges

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — On Aug. 24, Antonio Laboy, 26 of Springfield, was arrested during a traffic stop by the North Adams Police Department involving two vehicles.    According to a report from the District Attorney's Office, the traffic stop was made on the grounds of an active investigation into drug trafficking in North County. The stops occurred on Church Street in North Adams, shortly after the vehicles crossed from Adams into North Adams. Laboy was a passenger in one of the vehicles at the time of the stop.    Laboy is an alleged drug trafficker who has been traveling back and forth to Berkshire County from Springfield Massachusetts. BCC Signs Articulation Agreement with William James College

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshire Community College (BCC) announces the signature of an articulation agreement with William James College (WJC) in Newton allowing BCC students to transfer seamlessly to WJC.     The articulation agreement provides guaranteed admission for eligible BCC students to obtain a bachelor of science degree from WJC. Students who have completed an associate degree at BCC with a minimum of 60 credits in Liberal Arts (no concentration), Liberal Arts with Psychology Concentration, Human Services/Social Work Transfer or Criminal Justice, with a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher, are guaranteed admission in WJC's Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Human

Central Berkshire Reviews Regional Agreement Draft

DALTON, Mass. — Central Berkshire Regional School District is referring a draft of a new regional agreement to its lawyers to ensure clarity.    The School Committee meeting was presented the draft on Thursday by Todd Emerson, chair of the Regional Agreement Amendment Ad Hoc Committee.   The ad hoc committee has been working on the draft for the past year and received aid from Massachusetts Association of Regional Schools consultant Stephan Hemman. MARS serves as a consultant to aid districts in creating regional agreements between towns.    The draft was worked on by representatives from all the town's involved, not just School Committee

Pittsfield Charter Committee to Review Charter Objection

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Charter Review Committee on Tuesday will tackle a request to review the charter objection, a motion that has delayed votes and created a stir in council chambers over the last term.

Central Berkshire OKs Locked Cell Phone Pouches

DALTON, Mass. — The Central Berkshire Regional School Committee approved utilizing Yondr pouches in its middle and high schools during its meeting on Thursday night.    The pouches allow cell phones and other devices to be locked magnetically so they cannot be used during school hours.    The district was approved for a $20,000 grant to cover the first year costs of the initiative. The funds will cover the cost of the pouches, replacement pouches, training, the permanent infrastructure, including the magnet installations, and support during this change.    The goal of the policy change is to help students be more engaged in school and to prevent students
