Soap Box Derby Saturday on Pittsfield's West Side

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- Westside Legends is hosting its second annual Westside Super Soap Box Derby on Saturday, Aug. 19, from noon to 4 p.m.   Check in starts at 11 a.m., and the first race at noon features the city’s mayoral candidates at noon. The races will be held at the corner of Columbus and Robbins Avenues.    There will be three divisions: young kids, teens, and adults (ages 18 and up). Trophies will be presented for first place and Best in Show for each division. Three Hospitalized After Merrill Road Car Accident

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — On Aug. 12, 2023 at approximately 1:00 PM, the Pittsfield Police Dept., Pittsfield Fire Dept. and County Ambulance responded to the area of 635 Merrill Rd for a motor vehicle crash with serious injuries.   A 2006 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck operated by a Mark Papkey, 52 of Pittsfield, was traveling north bound on Merrill Road, when he collided with a south bound 2006 Subaru Forester operated by a Parkpoom Seesangrit, 34 years of age of Pittsfield.   In addition to Mr. Seesangrit, the Subaru was also occupied by Phannee Seesangrit, 61 of Pittsfield,  as well as Krobkul Seesangrit, 35 of Pittsfield.    As a result of this incident,

Pickleball Coming to Springside Park in the Fall

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — A new pickleball facility is coming this fall.

Located in the northeast corner of Springside Park near the Doyle Softball Complex on Benedict Road, it will feature six courts and a small parking lot.

A groundbreaking scheduled for Monday was cancelled due to inclement weather but there are plans to unveil the finished project with a ribbon cutting in the fall.

Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong and is suitable for singles and doubles. It has recently grown in popularity with the Sports and Fitness Industry Association estimating 4.8 million current players, which is almost double the number of players five years ago.

Mass Celebrates Federal Funds to Support Energy-Efficient Building Codes

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced it was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to receive a competitive grant for $3.9 million.    The funds will support the adoption and implementation of the updated Stretch Energy and Specialized building codes throughout Massachusetts. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Using a FY23 Regional Economic Development Projects Grant from the Massachusetts Office of Business Development, 1Berkshire has awarded 52 facade improvement grants through its Best Foot Forward Program.    The Best Foot Forward Program, now in its second pilot year, provided small businesses and organizations with a pedestrian-facing facade, storefront, or presence with grants of up to $1000 to support non-construction improvements to their respective business aesthetic. Forthill Farms Receives $90K Grant

BOSTON — The Healey-Driscoll Administration announced awards of $710,140 in APR Improvement Program (AIP) funding to nine farms across Massachusetts including $90,000 for Forthill Farms in Pittsfield.    Forthill Farm will expand their existing farmstand building, increasing their operational efficiency by creating additional space for retail sales, washing and packaging produce, and storage.   The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources’ (MDAR) grants provide business planning, technical assistance, and funds to commercial farms with land that has already been protected through MDAR’s Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) Program to help

Berkshire DA's Office Receives $100K for Youth, Police Programs

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Berkshire District Attorney's Office has received a nearly $100,000 federal grant for youth community engagement and law enforcement suppression.

Third Mosquito in Pittsfield Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health confirmed a third positive result of West Nile Virus (WNV) in weekly samples of mosquitoes collected by the Berkshire County Mosquito Control Project in the City of Pittsfield.   The sample was taken in the vicinity of Allendale (Cheshire Road).   According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's WNV Risk Map, Pittsfield's WNV Risk level has now elevated to moderate. This means "infection with WNV is likely or has occurred" in humans.
