STOW, Mass. — State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey is urging residents to make fire safety a priority in the kitchen as we approach Thanksgiving Day, the number one day for home fires in Massachusetts. "Each year, we see about twice as many fires on Thanksgiving as on the next-closest day," State Fire Marshal Ostroskey said. "Don't let a fire ruin this special time with your family and loved ones. Practice fire safety when cooking and heating your home, and be sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that can alert you to danger."  PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Nearly 1,800 families' tables will be set with a turkey and all of the fixings on Thursday thanks to the Thanksgiving Angels. The program, now in its 15th year, addresses food insecurity by providing a meal kit to those in need so that everyone can enjoy a holiday feast.
The program has over 20 participating organizations, food pantries, and faith communities. This amounts to hundreds of volunteers.
"It's a great community effort," Program coordinator Mary Wheat said. "There are people from everywhere helping."

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — After Berkshire Community College's first Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program was held last spring, the College's Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program decided to offer it again this semester. The free series of classes, designed for people 65 and older interested in feeling better and staying active, is held twice a week for 12 weeks, according to a press release. Twelve participants are enrolled, including five who returned from the spring program. PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Ho, ho, ho! The city's annual tree lighting ceremony will be in person for the first time in two years on Dec. 2. It will include musical performances, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Clause on a firetruck, and of course — holiday cheer.
"Really excited about bringing that back in person because that's one of my favorite events of the year," Recreation & Special Events Coordinator Becky Manship told the Parks Commission on Tuesday.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Zoning Board of Appeals last week granted a special permit to expand Allendale Pines after a resolution was reached between the applicant and an abutter. "In a city that has an extreme need for any type of housing that may be affordable, this is an option that is not already out there as much as it should be," board member Esther Anderson said on Tuesday.
Owner Eagle Allendale LLC plans to expand the 65-lot mobile home park with 21 new 5,000 square-foot lots, separating the parks into AP South and the new AP North.
Lot rent is proposed to be $550 for AP North and the existing lots' lower rate of $320 will not change. The

 PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The City Council took up various agenda items related to snow removal on Tuesday while flurries fell for the first time this season. Councilors voted to update to the city's snow and ice removal process to increase compliance, designated a private way for plowing, and received a breakdown of fiscal 2022 and 2023 winter expenditures.
Changes to the city's handling of snow include increasing the number of inspectors from one to all inspectors in the Health Department and allowing only one warning per calendar year.
