WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Five Williams pitchers combined to hold Hamilton to three hits Sunday, helping the Ephs a key 4-1 win over their NESCAC West Division rivals at Cole Field.

The Ephs, winners of five out of their last eight games, improved to 8-15 overall and 4-5 in the West while Hamilton slipped to 13-14 overall and 3-5 in the West. Williams is home Tuesday vs. RPI at 4 p.m. The Ephs will head to Wesleyan Friday and host the Cardinals for a Saturday doubleheader in a showdown for second place and a spot in the NESCAC Tournament.

"We had two-must win games this weekend and we won them both," Ephs' head coach Bill Barrale said. "We've been playing much better as of late. This is a good group, a resilient group. We're getting better as the season goes on and it's nice to still be alive heading into next weekend."

Both teams ended up with three hits in Sunday's nine-inning contest. The Ephs managed to make more of theirs than the visitors, but walked a tightrope much of the game as they issued 11 walks to Continental batters. Hamilton left 15 runners on base in the game. Williams hurlers combined to strike out 15 batters.

The Continentals took a 1-0 lead in the third on Matt Cappelletti's bad-hop single over Eph third baseman Tom Benz's head — and glove. After being no-hit through four innings by Hamilton starter Tom Riley, the Ephs scratched out two runs in the fifth, using just one hit. David Kwan got things started with a one-out double to center. Riley then walked Frank Stola and Adam Regensburg to load the bases. Mike Stamas' grounder to short resulted in a forceout and a run as Kwan scored. A wild pitch allowed Stola to score the go-ahead run.

The Ephs added two big insurance runs in the seventh. With two outs, Stola walked and stole second. Adam Regensburg followed with an RBI-double to center and Stamas then roped a double to left that scored Regensburg to make it 4-1.

Women’s Golf
AMHERST, Mass. -- Williams placed third at the Jack Leaman Invitational Sunday at the par-74 Hickory Ridge Golf Club.

The setup of the course bodes well for the longer hitters on the tea,  and the team was primed to make a raging seven-stroke comeback. Unfortunately, Williams could not pull off the comeback and remained in third place behind Amherst and NYU. The Ephs shot 318, and it wasn't enough to overcome Amherst and NYU with their second day scores of 318 and 317, respectively. Williams shot 641 for the weekend, NYU shot 637, and Amherst won with a 634.

It seemed that the Ephs were on their way towards glory on the front nine with all five women at two-over or better. The back nine, however, hit them hard and the women started to fall apart on the tough stretch of holes 12 through 14. Junior Cordelia Chan was one of four players to break 80 today and her 78 vaulted her up to a second-place tie individually for the tournament.

The Ephs host the final tournament of the regular season next weekend at Taconic Golf Club.

Women’s Tennis
WATERVILLE, Maine – In the second of this weekend's Maine matches, Williams defeated Colby, 9-0.

The day began with a sweep of doubles for Williams (15-). Eighth-ranked duo Juli Raventos and Julia Cancio, both seniors, cruised to an 8-1 victory while teams of Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio and Korina Neveux as well as Chloe Henderson and Mia Gancayco both earned victories, 8-2 and 8-1, respectively.

In singles, No. 15 Juli Raventos defeated junior Lydia Venditti in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. No. 23 Leah Bush battled back from a 4-6 loss in her first set for the 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 victory over Colby's Gabby Venditti, also a junior. Chloe Henderson followed with a victory in straight sets, as did  Mia Gancayco. Neveux and McDonnell Nieto del Rio rounded out the sweep with 6-1, 6-1 wins.

The undefeated Ephs will next travel to Tufts on Saturday.

Men’s Tennis
WATERVILLE, Maine – The fourth-ranked Williams men defeated Colby, 9-0, on Sunday.

The Ephs flourished in the singles portion of the match, and there were only a few instances where they were threatened. The most notable exception was in the battle of the No. 1s, between Williams’ Brian Grodecki and Scott Altmeyer. After not winning a game in the first set, Grodecki took the next set 6-4, and then won the super tiebreak 10-8 to earn a hard-fought win.

Williams hosts Amherst and Hamilton next weekend.
