PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Berkshires Jazz, which operates the Pittsfield CityJazz Festival and other events throughout the year, has announced the winners to its annual student art contest. The winning entry is an abstract watercolor by Estefania Rivera Cadvid.

The first-place painting will become the graphic symbol of the 13th annual Pittsfield CityJazz Festival, in mid-October.

The contest, which normally takes place during April, was conceived as a way to spread the interest in jazz to a broader part of the community, and draw attention to Jazz Appreciation Month. After a late start because of the burst water pipes that impacted the art facilities at PHS, this year’s entries are being exhibited at City Hall through the month of May.

The judges were charged with the difficult task of determining three winners, and five honorable mentions, and one special "judge's choice" award, which calls attention to work that – while not taking a prize - is especially deserving of recognition.

The judges were given no identifying information of the artists or their schools. Winning paintings include:

• First place: Estefania Rivera Cadvid

• Second place: Anthony Curico

• Third place: Kenzi Kinnas

Honorable mentions were awarded to Lauren Phillips, Abby Kittler, Lauren Cowlin, Brian Lavinio and Stella Kimball Denbitzen. The Judge's Choice award was given to Emily Mazzeo.

This year's judges included multimedia artist and designer Debbie Carter, oil painter Sean McCusker, and designer Tom Buckley. The project was coordinated by Pittsfield High School art teacher Colleen Quinn. All of this year's entries were from P.H.S. students.

Overall project coordinator is Art Niedeck, a jazz musician and retired music educator, and chairman of the Education Committee of Berkshires Jazz, Inc. In addition to its mission of presenting 'live' events, Berkshires Jazz, Inc. is chartered to foster jazz education throughout Berkshire County.

Jazz Appreciation Month is a national program started by the Smithsonian Institution in 2002 and recognized by Congress in 2003. Observed in April, the month of Duke Ellington’s birth, its purpose is to celebrate jazz, the country's indigenous art form, often referred to as "America's classical music."
