LEE, Mass. — Timothy Spence runs the successful Timothy's Restaurant and Pizzeria on Main Street in Lee. He has always understood that running a small business in a small town means being an active part of the community and is always thinking about ways to make a difference in the area.

So this season, he chose to partner with Elder Services of Berkshire County to raise funds for the local Meals on Wheels program.

"I take great pride in the menu and strong sense of community we have created at Timothy’s Restaurant," Spence said. "It made perfect sense for us to partner with an organization that has the same goals: good food and good friends."

Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, Timothy's Restaurant committed to donate 10 percent of their food sales on Wednesday and Thursday nights to the locally run program. They also invested in advertising to promote the opportunity.

On Dec. 23, Spence presented Elder Services with a check for $758 to support the senior nutrition program.

Through Elder Services of Berkshire County's nutrition program, Meals on Wheels provides healthy meals and friendly visits to more than 600 area seniors on an average weekday.  The program runs a significant shortfall every year despite government assistance and requests for voluntary contributions from the recipients.

"Our kitchen in Lanesborough prepared over 213,000 meals last year," said Nicholas Kirchner, Elder Services' chief financial officer. "Without the support of Mr. Spence and other philanthropic business leaders around the Berkshires, we would not be able to provide for so many. We are grateful for his commitment to the well-being of our senior citizens."

Elder Services of Berkshire County served nutritious meals to more than 2,000 local senior citizens last year through home delivery and the 15 congregate meal sites operated across the county. Their drivers (many of whom are volunteers) logged over 220,000 miles, providing well-being checks and delivery to almost 1,600 frail homebound elders.

"This program leans heavily on the generosity of our community," said John Lutz, the agency's executive director. "We are very lucky to have the commitment of Timothy and many others to keep our elders in their own homes as long as possible."
