Friday: I Am a Part of Art Poetry Reading at the Lichtenstein

 

CATA will hold a poetry reading in conjunction with the I Am a Part of Art Show that includes selected works from CATA's Writers Workshop.  The exhibit runs through Saturday and features over 100 works of art created by artists with disabilities from Berkshire County.  The Lichtenstein Center for the Arts is open Wednesday-Saturday 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Friday: The Novel Ideas with Special Guest Hayley Sabella at the Whitney

 

Back by popular demand, the Whitney Center for the Arts and the Pitts House Concert Series are happy to announce the return of The Novel Ideas, with special guest Hayley Sabella, on Friday July 24th. Friday+: Shrek The Musical at Berkshire Museum

 

Shrek The Musical (Theatre for Young Audiences version) is a Tony Award-winning fairy tale adventure that brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage. An unlikely hero, Shrek finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you have the kind of mess that calls for a real hero.

Friday+: Lost In Yonkers at Barrington Stage

 

The Boston Globe says "you owe it to yourself to see Barrington Stage Company's outstanding production" of  Lost in Yonkers.  The show is a  heartfelt and hilarious coming-of-age story by America's great comic playwright, Neil Simon. Like many of Simon's plays, Lost in Yonkers is drawn from his experiences growing up in New York City. Set during World War II, two young brothers, Arty and Jay, are sent to live with their formidable German Jewish immigrant grandmother, the sweet but mentally challenged Aunt Bella, and Uncle Louie, a small-time hoodlum running away from gangsters.

The Pittsfield Suns have four consecutive home games this week, all at 7pm. On Friday they play the Worcester Bravehearts, on Saturday the Bristol Blues, Wednesday versus the Seacoast Mavericks and on Thursday they're against Martha's Vineyard Sharks. Friday+: Last Weekend of Bells Are Ringing at Colonial Theatre

 

This is the last weekend of Bells Are Ringing.  The Berkshire Eagle says it is a "crisp, knowing, poised production." The Tony Award-nominated musical that made Judy Holliday a star, Bells Are Ringing is a classic comedy with a sweet heart. Telephone service operator, Ella Peterson, played by Tony Award-nominated Kate Baldwin (A Little Night Music, Finian's Rainbow) is not your typical phone operator. Using a variety of comical personae's, Ella meddles with her clients' lives as she takes and delivers their phone messages. Ella's busybody ways trigger trouble when she falls for one of her customers, Jeff Moss, played by Kate Baldwin's real life husband, Broadway and television actor, Graham Rowat (A Little Night Music).A hilarious mesh of mistaken identity and mishaps follow in this delightful musical directed by BTG Alum, Ethan Heard (A Little Night Music, Cat and The Canary).

The Whitney Center for the Arts is delighted to provide the pre-show serenade for Pittsfield Shakespeare in the Park's Romeo and Juliet's Friday and Saturday performances. Each performance will start at 7:15. Bring picnics, make an evening out of it! Of course all of this is free to the public, both the music and the show.  Friday features Rakish Paddy and Saturday is Oakes & Smith.

Friday: Roar at The Little Cinema

The City of Pittsfield has teamed up with Berkshire Lightning, the Berkshire Running Center and the YMCA, for this FREE program which introduces and teaches youth the basics of track and field including warm ups and several running and field components. For children ages 6 to 14. Registration and warm ups will begin at 9:00 am with events beginning at 9:30 am.

It's National Dance day at the market, from 10:30 to 11:45 there will be live drumming and singing on traditional instruments from West Africa and the Caribbean with Tamarack Hollow Nature and Cultural Center co-founder, Aimee Gelinas (Gaia Roots, Trio Candela and Sifer) with guest drum students, The Berkshire Rhythm Keepers. And at 12pm Berkshire Children and Family's Kids 4 Harmony will perform! At 11am there will be a chef demo with Molly Johnston from Back to Basics CookingShoppers will find pasture-raised meats, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, baked goods, coffee, wine, cut flowers, and plants, as well as beautiful artisan wares. Robin Hood is the Hampstead Stage Company's adaptation of the classic English folktale, chronicling the life and adventures of the infamous outlaw with a heart of gold.  We follow Robin as he wages an ongoing war against the oppressive tyrant King John, while befriending the residents of Sherwood Forest and making mischief with his Band of Merrie Men.  The play is an action-packed hour, filled with brave heroics, bumbling villains, and heartwarming moments. After a long and colorful life working in munitions and getting entangled in the Spanish Civil War, the Manhattan Project, and other definitive events of the 20th century, Allan Karlsson finds himself stuck in a nursing home. Determined to escape on his 100th birthday, he leaps out of a window and onto the nearest bus, kicking off an unexpected journey involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash, some wicked criminals, and an elephant named Sonya. Sunday: Staged Reading of "Proof" by David Auburn at the Whitney

 

Town Players of Pittsfield presents a staged reading of David Auburn's play, Proof, directed by Matthew T. Teichner. The play concerns the main character Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius in his fifties and professor at the University of Chicago and her struggle with her own mathematical genius and mental illness. Catherine had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Throughout, the play explores Catherine's fear of following in her father's footsteps, both mathematically and mentally and her desperate attempts to stay in control.

Sunday: Story Slam at the Lichtenstein

 

Get an early taste of the upcoming WordXWord festival with story slam preliminary at the Lichtenstein.  Similar in many ways to the NPR Moth Story Slam at the WXW Story Slam storytellers have 4 minutes to tell a true story based on the theme. Storytellers are free to put their spin on the challenge leading us on a wide range of fantastic four minute journeys. In the spirit of friendly competition, stories and their telling are judged by 3 judges chosen from the audience on a scale of 1-10. Monday: Federation Connecting with Community "Moving Through the Tree of Life at Congregation Knesset Israel

 

The Jewish Federation of the Berkshires' Connecting with Community series will be joined by Sue Gurland, a retired acupuncturist, t'ai chi teacher, master teacher, and spiritual director for  "Moving Through the Tree of Life: Where T'ai Chi meets Kabbalah." Gurland created "Moving Through the Tree of Life" for students to connect to the divine through their bodies in a Jewish context.  She draws upon her lifelong experiences to integrate authentic Jewish practices with contemplative movement, meditation and visualization.  The resulting exercises promote energetic aliveness, relaxation, and a deep spiritual connection to the source of all being.

Tuesday: Xica Da Silva at The Little Cinema

 

This is part two of the LIFT EV'RY VOICE Film Series special screening + discussion with Dr. Don Quinn Kelley, historian and filmmaker. The uncommonly sexy, clever and ambitious slave Xica Da Silva won her independence and much more in mid-19th-century Brazil by using her feminine wiles and her lovemaking prowess to induce the Portuguese town governor to grant her freedom. In so doing, she became a legend and an inspiration to Brazil's large population of slaves and (eventually) ex-slaves. This film tells her story. Portuguese with English subtitles.

Tuesday: Explore the Universe with Astronomer Rick Costello at The Whitney

 

Talking Arts @the Whit - Free! Enjoy an evening lecture about the history of our universe from its beginning to the universe we see today 13.72 billion years ago later. Rick Costello will explain galaxies, stars and planets, as well as how the universe began and how it may end. After the talk, there will be a telescope to look at Saturn and the moon.

Thursday: Federation Connecting with Community program "Anna's Brooklyn Promise" at Congregation Knesset Israel

 

The Jewish Federation Connecting with Community series will welcome Milton Lestz for a staged reading of Anna's Brooklyn Promise, a play by D.K. Oklahoma. Lestz, director, is formerly of the Cornerstone Playhouse in Sparta, NJ. D.K. Oklahoma is the pen name of Donna Davis form Oklahoma, and the play is taken from an anthology of scripts.  Actors featured will be Adam Irick, Laura Gardner, and Louise H. Frankenberg.
