PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Pittsfield Suns exploded for seven runs in the first inning as they routed the Martha's Vineyard Sharks in a 10-0 blowout on Monday evening.
The Suns started pounding away early as their first six batters of the game all recorded hits. The Suns ended up scoring seven runs on 10 hits in the first inning alone. Rob Mclam (UMass-Amherst), Travis Smith (Assumption) and Steve Dill (Harvard) all hit doubles as the Suns chased the Sharks starter Matt Hegarty (Chapman) out of the game after recording only one out.
Smith led the Suns offensively with two hits and three RBIs on the night. Mclam also had two hits and a walk while Dill had two hits and two RBIs. Ryan Dietrich (UPenn) also picked up two hits for the Suns.
Matt Gage (Sienna) earned his second win of the season in his second start. Gage went five innings while scattering five hits and striking out four. Tyler Sturkie (Newburry), Matt Coleman (St. Rose), and Jeff Thomas (UMass-Boston) combined for four innings of shutout relief to preserve the shutout for the Suns.
The offensive spark comes at just the right time for the Suns as they are now 22-21 and trail the Sharks by only half of a game. The Sharks are currently holding onto the fourth and final playoff spot with a 22-20 record but the Suns are within striking distance as they still have nine games left to play on the season.
The Suns are in action next on Tuesday when they travel to Old Orchard Beach for a 7 p.m. game against the Raging Tide. The Suns return home on Thursday when they host the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs.
