PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Brockton Rox capitalized on a couple of defensive miscues and downed the Pittsfield Suns, 4-2, on Tuesday evening.
The Suns hitters had a hard time solving the Rox pitching staff as the Rox held the Suns hitless until the fifth inning. For the game, the Suns only managed five hits.
The Suns pitching staff went toe-to-toe with the Rox as they only allowed one earned run, which didn’t happen until the ninth inning. Jason Condit (Central Illinois) was charged the loss for the Suns despite a solid start in which he didn’t allow a single earned run over 5 2/3 innings.
The Suns briefly led when Brandon Howard (Bowling Green) scored after a passed ball in the fifth inning. The Suns lead was short lived, however, as the Rox put two across in the sixth inning. Luis Gonzalez (Concordia) and Jordan Berry (George Washington) each doubled and Brendan Doonan (URI) hit an RBI single to give the Rox a 2-1 lead. From there the Rox would add one more run in both the eighth and ninth innings to earn the 4-2 win.
John Sheehan (William & Mary) earned the win for the Rox as he pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief without being charged an earned run. Vito Perna (Southeastern Louisiana) picked up the save with a shutout ninth inning.
Rob Mclam (UMass-Amherst) led the Suns offensively as he had two hits on the night while Jimmy Ricoy (UMass-Lowell) had the only RBI.
With the loss the Suns drop to 20-20 while the Rox improve to 19-19. The Suns are in action next on Wednesday when they travel to Martha’s Vineyard for a 6 p.m. contest against the Sharks.
