Suns Rally To Defeat MavericksBy Greg Gilmore, Pittsfield Suns Sports Info 10:15AM / Wednesday, July 18, 2012 | |
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Needing only a fly ball to end the game, Travis Smith hit a rocket off the left field wall to lift the Suns to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Seacoast Mavericks.
The Suns trailed the Mavericks 4-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning before the Mavericks pitching staff suddenly couldn’t find the strike zone. Despite only having one walk in the game before the ninth, the Suns used four free passes to tie the game at four apiece. Smith delivered the rest as he hammered the second pitch he saw deep into the night to drive in Chad Funkhouser (Brevard) for the game-winning run. Smith barely had time to reach first before he was mobbed by his teammates on the field.
Jason Condit (Illinois Central) strung together another strong start for the Suns as he tossed for five innings while only allowing one run. Tito Marrero (Long Island) and Michael Meszoros (Keystone) pitched well in relief for the Suns as the duo combined for three innings while only allowing one run. Adam Krebs (Keystone) got the win on the mound.
The Suns offense combined for 28 hits in the past two games. Anthony Carona continued his hot hitting as he scorched a double in the second inning that lead to the Suns’ first run of the game. Paul Speicher (LeMoyne) also doubled as he finished the night 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Mavericks spoiled a strong start from southpaw Ryan Walker (Charleston) who went seven innings while only allowing three runs. Kevin Mayone was charged with the loss as he walked three batters in the bottom half of the ninth before giving up the walk off hit to Smith.
With the win the Suns improve to 15-19 while the Mavericks drop to 18-15.
