The alteration in Barrington Stage's liquor license will allow it to make better use of the lower-level cabaret.
PITTSIELD, Mass. — Barrington Stage Company will now be able to expand its alcohol concession to utilize the former VFW bar area in its recently acquired Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center on Linden Street, following permission by the Licensing Board on Monday.

BSC purchased the 12,602-square foot building in April for $340,843 with a gift from the Blatt's. The company had been operating the upstairs of the building as Stage 2 since 2008, renting it from the Veterans of Foreign Wars post there.

The club left the building and surrendered its own special liquor license back to the city in April, after which BSC filed an application in late May for an alteration of premise of its current seasonal serving license, which permits it to serve beer and wine in the upstairs cafe space adjacent to its 110-seat theater.

The alteration to the license will now allow the company to make better use of the lower level room that had served as the veterans club bar, which it is calling Mr. Finn's Cabaret. The cabaret can accommodate crowds of up to 50 for performances on its small stage.

"This is very exciting for Barrington Stage, and for the city," said attorney Sherwood Guernsey, representing the 27-year-old theater company, which moved to Pittsfield in 2005.

Mr. Finn's Cabaret, named after the Tony Award-winning composer of "Falsettos" and "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and artistic producer of BSC's Musical Theatre Lab William Finn, officially opened on Memorial Day weekend.
