Sophia Niksa, 79, of Wahconah Heights died Friday morning at Hillcrest Commons, where she had resided since March.
Born in Dickson, Pa., on June 18, 1926, daughter of Machiej and Anna Malicki Surowiec, she moved to Pittsfield during her teenage years and was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mrs. Niksa was employed by New England Telephone Co. as an operator for 25 years and by the former Hillcrest Hospital in the housekeeping department.
She was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a member of its Mothers' Guild, and enjoyed reading.
Her husband, Frank S. Niksa, whom she married Aug. 25, 1952, died June 22, 1973.
She leaves three daughters, Julianna Daly and Ann Depson, both of Pittsfield, and Fran Stewart of Juno Beach, Fla.; a brother, Michael Surowiec of Pittsfield; 11 grandchildren, and five great-granddaughters.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Sophia Niksa, who died Friday, July 22, will be held Thursday, July 28, at 8:15 from DERY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at Holy Family Church celebrated by the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home, 54 Bradford St.
Mrs. Niksa enjoyed baby-sitting her grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Mariane Dottavio.
