Derek W. Malcolm, 64

June 01, 2018

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Mr. Derek William Malcolm, 64, of Adams died on Friday, June 1, 2018, at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield.

He was born in Quebec, Canada, on July 14, 1953, son of the late William and Sylvia (Gravel) Malcolm. He attended schools in Adams and graduated from Hoosac Valley High School. Derek worked for many years at General Dynamics in Pittsfield until his illness forced him to stop working. He was a longtime member of the PNA, Turn Hall, and the Forest Park Country Club, Adams, where he golfed every chance he had. Derek was also an avid volleyball player for many years and later, a beloved coach, to many.

Derek will be remembered for his kind and generous personality, hosting numerous golf charities over the years, helping to cook at many a community spaghetti supper, and helping anyone who asked for it. He shared his enthusiasm, humor, and positive energy with all, making friends with anyone who crossed his path. Above all, Derek lived life to the fullest, attending several rock concerts and numerous sport events each year and regularly being part of the Adams community and nightlife. Anyone who knew him saw him walking around town in a Pearl Jam or Patriots shirt, with a pair of shorts, his Scottish coat of arms proudly inked on his calf, a baseball cap, and a grin on his face. And anyone who knew him hoped he might just stop and say hello and share one of his hilarious tales with you.

Derek's family feels a large sadness at the passing of such a special, supportive, and wonderful father, brother, grandfather, and uncle. He is survived by a daughter, Glenna Malcolm and her husband Franklin Egan of Boalsburg, Pa.; a son, Brent Malcolm of Adams; a daughter, Jillian Perrier of North Adams; one sister, Pam Kondel and her husband Paul of Adams; three grandchildren, Dominic Malcolm and Rosalyn ("Rosie") and Malcolm Egan; two nephews, Geoffrey Kondel and his wife Marissa and Daniel Kondel and his companion Bridget O’Neil-Hopkins; many Canadian cousins who spent summers playing with Derek and Pam as children; as well as many very close friends, whom he considered his family.

Funeral notice: The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Paciorek Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams.

Calling hours are Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to 'Glenna Malcolm' to help defray funeral expenses. The family will be making a donation to the Lymphoma Research Foundation in Derek’s memory.
