Ruth Rosenberg, 88

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Ruth Sidransky Rosenberg, born July 1, 1929, to Mary and Ben Sidransky, died October 7, 2017, at 4 p.m. with her son Mark Hyman and her daughter-in-law Mia Lux Koning at her side at Berkshire Medical Center. 



She was born in Brooklyn to deaf parents and grew up in Brooklyn and the Bronx. She went to Hunter College in Manhattan and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and went on to become a teacher. In 1949, she married Saul Hyman and left for Europe, where they lived in Vienna, Munich and Barcelona for 11 years. She was the co-founder and principal of the American School of Barcelona. 



In 1967, she married Richard Rosenberg and moved to Toronto with her children, Mark and Carrie Hyman. Ruth was a lifelong student with a rich life of the mind and a deep love for her family, reading and writing. In 1990, she published the book, “In Silence,” about growing up hearing in a deaf family. 



She deeply loved her family and was there for them, always.



She is survived by her son Mark; her daughter Carrie died in 2012. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Rachel, Misha, Ben and Sarah; her brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Gina Sidransky and her niece Claudia Sidransky; and her brother and sister-in-law Lewis and Vera Rosenberg. 



She is predeceased by her husband, Richard Rosenberg.   



Funeral notice: The funeral service will be at Knesset Israel in Pittsfield, Mass., at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. Arrangements are under the direction of Roche Funeral Home.
