Oil prices are dropping and those declines are starting to show up at the gas station. For American consumers, this is as good as a tax cut.

In some parts of the country, prices at the pump have fallen below $3 a gallon. Nationwide gas prices hovered at $3.61 this week. That's not cheap, but it is a heck of a lot better than paying $4 a gallon or more.

Back in February, I warned readers that gas prices were going higher. At that time oil was flirting with $102 a barrel. It ultimately reached $110 before falling to as low as $84 this week. The driver behind this decline is global oil consumption, which fell to 88.5 million barrels a day by the end of April from 90.4 million in late December

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — More than 150 students, parents, school personnel and members of the community spoke out on Wednesday against a variety of proposed cuts in the School Department's most recently revised budget.

School officials initially requested a budget that called for $54.5 million dollars in city funding but at their May 30 meeting, Mayor Daniel Bianchi asked for a $53.5 budget as part of the overall $132.9 million municipal budget he will put before the City Council.

The gap in the budget needs is primarily the result of the absence of a million in federal stimulus that was incorporated in the 2012 Pittsfield school budget as a one-time only funding source.

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Barkshire Arts and Technology Public Charter School seniors thought they were done with all of their assignments but on graduation day, Principal Benjamin Klompus gave them one more.

Klompus had pencils and paper prepared underneath the seats of the nine graduates.  During his remarks on Saturday, he told them to grade themselves, one to five,  on their own purpose, curiosity, effort, respect, reflection and integrity — and, yes, spelling counted.

"This is your core score. It is not any part of your transcript but rather one I hope

Organizer Peter White said Morningside Pride Night is a twist on National Night Out. More photos can be found here.
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Six months after a murder shook up the Morningside neighborhood and brought negative press, neighbors came together to show they are proud of where they live.

The eighth annual Morningside Pride Night on Thursday attracted hundreds to Morningside Elementary School — the largest crowd organizers have seen. The event provides children with games and activities while service organizations provide information to the parents. The goal, according to organizer Peter White, is to celebrate the area in which they live.
