Lenox High Grads Cautioned Against Digital IsolationBy Stephen Dravis, Special to iBerkshires 01:21AM / Monday, June 11, 2012
Lenox High valedictorian Christopher Bravo and salutatorian Lindsey Moran.LENOX, Mass. — Odds are before the first celebratory cake was sliced on Sunday, some member of Lenox High School's class of 2012 took the time to update his or her Facebook status to "graduated."
That is just fine with valedictorian Christopher Bravo — as long as the grad in question kept the virtual celebration in perspective.
"Awareness of the importance of real interaction is critical so that we can begin repairing our society," Bravo said in his valedictory address at Tanglewood's Serge Koussevitzky Music Shed.
And those "real interactions" are in real danger of being lost as 0 Comments Read More >> |

The Independent Investor: Out of the Tank, Into the BankBy Bill Schmick, 10:50AM / Sunday, June 10, 2012
Oil prices are dropping and those declines are starting to show up at the gas station. For American consumers, this is as good as a tax cut.
In some parts of the country, prices at the pump have fallen below $3 a gallon. Nationwide gas prices hovered at $3.61 this week. That's not cheap, but it is a heck of a lot better than paying $4 a gallon or more.
Back in February, I warned readers that gas prices were going higher. At that time oil was flirting with $102 a barrel. It ultimately reached $110 before falling to as low as $84 this week. The driver behind this decline is global oil consumption, which fell to 88.5 million barrels a day by the end of April from 90.4 million in late December 0 Comments Read More >> |

Residents Protest Proposed Pittsfield School Budget CutsBy Joe Durwin, Pittsfield Correspondent 06:21AM / Sunday, June 10, 2012
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — More than 150 students, parents, school personnel and members of the community spoke out on Wednesday against a variety of proposed cuts in the School Department's most recently revised budget.
School officials initially requested a budget that called for $54.5 million dollars in city funding but at their May 30 meeting, Mayor Daniel Bianchi asked for a $53.5 budget as part of the overall $132.9 million municipal budget he will put before the City Council.
The gap in the budget needs is primarily the result of the absence of a million in federal stimulus that was incorporated in the 2012 Pittsfield school budget as a one-time only funding source.
