@theMarket: July Begins With a BangBy Bill Schmick, 07:23AM / Saturday, July 07, 2012
This week global stock markets charged out of the gate with the averages making up for most of the ground lost since May. All three averages experienced two month highs until a bout of profit-taking brought prices back to earth at the end of the week. I expect this summer rally to continue for the next few months.
But no market goes straight up, so I think investors should expect a "two steps forward, one step back" kind of market. I would use any pullbacks to add to positions.
In my last column "Germany Blinks," I explained some of the reasons I expected the rally to continue. Here it is just a few days later and some of the stimulus I expected from governments around 0 Comments Read More >> |

The Independent Investor: Bad News Is Good NewsBy Bill Schmick, 11:05AM / Friday, July 06, 2012
Both here and abroad the economic data is indicating that the world's economies are contracting. Yet, global stock markets are rising. Once upon a time that would have been a contradiction, but not today.
Over the past year the financial problems of Europe have been well publicized. Starting with Greece, most of the southern tier of European Union countries have been mired in recession, high debt and declining exports. Those problems have infected the entire continent, resulting in an EU-wide recession, but that is old news.
Over in Asia the story is the same. China, the economic engine of that region, has also experienced slowing growth, reducing the prospects for all its neighbors in the 0 Comments Read More >> |
'Ted': Stuffed With FantasyBy Michael S. Goldberger, iBerkshires Film Critic 10:10AM / Friday, July 06, 2012
Popcorn Column by Michael S. Goldberger Ted, voiced by Seth MacFarlane, stars in the light-hearted comedy that stars Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg.Seth MacFarlane's "Ted" is a kid's fairy tale strictly for adults. And although you get the feeling the filmmaker is breaking new ground, one isn't quite sure in what way that is. Clearly, however, this is a sweet, nutty and rather raunchy romp through the imagination, deliriously blurring the line between child fantasy and so-called grownup responsibilities. Once upon a time, about 20 or so years ago, there was a shy little boy named John Bennett who had no friends, and little prospect of ever accumulating any. 0 Comments Read More >> |

Summer Fairs Becoming Berkshire County StapleBy Stephen Dravis, Special to iBerkshires 04:00PM / Tuesday, July 03, 2012
Third Thursdays in Pittsfield is entering its sixth year of bringing people to North Street.WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Live music, art and food vendors are the staples of the summer-long street fairs that have proliferated throughout Berkshire County in the 21st century.
But at their core, these events are about much more.
"DownStreet Art was developed as an economic revival plan,” said Jonathan Secor, the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts director of special events who coordinates the 5-year-old North Adams arts festival. "The mission was to bring people downtown. The best way to do that is with really great art."
And, so far, the strategy has paid off, he 0 Comments Read More >> |

Letter From Rep. John Olver: June 2012 in ReviewBy Rep. John W. Olver, 02:23PM / Monday, July 02, 2012
On June 7, I signed onto a letterto the Committee on Agriculture, urging them to include provisions inthe upcoming Farm Bill which encourage and support rural farms andfarmers. Among these provisions are the immensely popular Farm to SchoolProgram, as well as the EBT system (which allows individuals to usenutrition benefits when purchasing food directly from farmers), ruraldevelopment programs, organic crop insurance, and livestock policieswhich make it easier for small farmers to access appropriateslaughterhouses. These provisions make important investments in smalland midsize farm businesses, as well as having positive environmentaland public health benefits and I will continue to urge 6 Comments Read More >> |
