"The purpose of tonight's meeting is simply to orient the committee to Wahconah Park," Parks, Open Space, and Natural Resource Program Manager James McGrath said on Thursday.

"To the grandstand and to areas approximate of the grandstand."

Members got an inside look at the grandstand, locker and bathroom facilities, and concession areas.  Aside from the grandstand's structural compromises, representatives from the Pittsfield Suns also spoke of struggles such as unattractive locker facilities, insufficient

Dalton Select Board Approves 19% Sewer Rate Increase
By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
12:58PM / Thursday, August 11, 2022

DALTON, Mass. — The Select Board approved a 19 percent increase in sewer rates for fiscal 2023 on Monday.

With the current rate of $3.53 bi-annual metered rate per 1,000 gallons and an annual flat rate of $394, the town would be in an almost $172,000 deficit. Officials say this warranted the increase.

The bi-annual metered rate is estimated to be about $4.21 and the annual flat rate is estimated to increase by about $75.

"It's clear that there has to be an increase and this is due to the intergovernmental expense, the Pittsfield water treatment," Town Manager Tom Hutcheson said.

"This is actually the first year I think in a while we've got a hard estimate

By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports
06:37AM / Thursday, August 11, 2022
PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars have scored 100 runs in eight games between the Western Massachusetts and New England championship tournaments.   That does not happen without production up and down a very potent lineup.   "You've got someone like Andrew Hammill who, you know, he's a pretty unassuming and quiet guy, but he's just been hitting the ball really hard," Pittsfield coach Ben Stohr said this week.   "We feel like, top to bottom, whatever nine or 10 guys we put out there all bring something to the table. Really, all 14 of them all belong on this team. They've put together competitive at-bats, and

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
05:16AM / Thursday, August 11, 2022

Resident Tonya Frazier expresses her disappoint that the council has to be constantly pressured to take action.

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Just days after District Attorney Andrea Harrington's investigation found the police killing of Miguel Estrella within legal bounds, the City Council has asked for policing alternatives.

A petition from Ward 1 Councilor Kenneth Warren requesting $75,000 appropriated for the creation of alternative community emergency services was referred to Mayor Linda Tyer.

"Daniel Gillis was our wake-up call," he said.

"Unfortunately, our city essentially did not. Miguel Estrella was the result of the community collectively hitting

By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
04:32AM / Thursday, August 11, 2022

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Members of the City Council aired their grievances on the North Street bike lanes on Tuesday night but data is showing that the lanes have improved safety.

Commissioner of Public Services and Utilities Ricardo Morales presented a road report for the corridor which showed a 77 percent crash decrease after the lanes were implemented.

This was in response to at-Large Councilor Karen Kalinowsky's request to investigate safety issues with the new bike lanes and the change in traffic pattern on North Street.

"One of the most important things, if not the most important thing for this project on North Street is the safety considerations and the impact safety

Crows Capture Pittsfield Soccer League Crown
By Stephen Dravis, iBerkshires.com Sports
09:27PM / Wednesday, August 10, 2022
PITTSFIELD, Mass. – Cale Rathburn made the only save of a penalty kick shootout on Wednesday night to send the Crows past the Maroon to claim the summer championship of the Pittsfield Soccer League.   The Crows saw a 1-0 lead evaporate in the closing minutes of the second half but rallied to hold off the Maroon through two five-minute overtimes to get to the shootout.   It was 4-4 going into the fifth round of PKs before Rahburn, who made six saves in the 50-minute regulation time, got all of Camilo Bermudez’ attempt to give the Crows an opening.   Reinaldo Castro then sealed the deal with a low liner past Maroon keeper Jeff Egan, who guessed the wrong way on his

04:32PM / Wednesday, August 10, 2022

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — The Selectmen approved a one-year extension for operating and manufacturing for Royal Hemp LLC, which is in the process of constructing a new building on its property.

"With everything the construction industry is going through now; the shortages of people, the shortages of equipment, the shortages of materials, I just realized that, by October, my plot might not change even though I'm going to put $500,000 into

Pittsfield Board of Health Considers Subcommittees
By Brittany Polito, iBerkshires Staff
02:15PM / Wednesday, August 10, 2022

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Board of Health is considering developing subcommittees to take a deeper dive into topics within its purview.

Last week, the board's newest member, Dr. Jeffrey Leppo, a cardiologist, suggested the implementation of subcommittees for topics such as housing, opioid settlement, RF radiation, and community health.

It will be on the agenda for the board's next meeting and members are expected to bring ideas for possible subcommittees.

Leppo suggested the subcommittees because more than two members cannot discuss agenda items out of session due to the Open Meeting Law. Subcommittees with one or two board members would be a good resource.

"I think it

The Classical Beat: Tanglewood and Sevenars are Not to be Missed
07:38AM / Wednesday, August 10, 2022
This week, as Tanglewood enters its sixth week of classical programming, the two large-scale orchestral works to be performed by the Tanglewood Music Festival Orchestra are 20th century classics - each at the polar opposite of the stylistic spectrum: Béla Bartók’s bold and powerful Suite from "The Miraculous Mandarin" and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s melodically luxuriant Symphony No. 2. Both are audience favorites. Adding to the mix in the chamber music sphere are an evening – the first of four – of a traversal of the complete piano works of Johannes Brahms by the stellar Garrick Ohlsson - and program three of "Pathways from Prague,"

Letter: Playing Ukraine National Anthem at Tanglewood on Parade Was Bad Idea
Letter to the Editor,
07:20PM / Tuesday, August 09, 2022

To the Editor:

As recently reported by The Eagle in a piece by Clarence Fanto, at Tanglewood on Parade, the Ukrainian national anthem was played. Many in the shed and the lawn stood up in support. While I would certainly concede that Russia is the worst of the two countries in terms of human rights abuses, Ukraine has many despicable aspects to it of which I am highly confident almost all the people standing were ignorant.

Boston Pops conductor Thomas Wilkins said, "The Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony stands with the people of Ukraine, and salutes all who stand for democracy and against injustice, and are willing to sacrifice everything for their freedom." Ironically, Mr.
